Consequences - If A Single Tooth Is Missing

All our teeth are held securely in the jaw bone. Disease, decay or trauma may lead to tooth loss. If a lost tooth is not immediately replaced, the surrounding bone begins to collapse and shrink. With no adjacent support, the neighboring teeth start to drift toward the area of the missing tooth.

Comparing Characteristics of Dental Crowns and Porcelain Veneers

Treatment Options - If All Your Teeth Are Missing

If you have lost all your teeth, Dr. Bannan has several treatment options available.

One option would be the placement of a removable denture. A denture sits loosely over your gums with no secure connection to the jaw bone. Another option would be choosing a dental implant based treatment. Implants are secured to the jaw bone, replacing the function of your natural tooth roots.

What Is A Dental Implant?

Dental implants replace missing teeth. The design of a dental implant is based on the design of a natural tooth. The natural tooth is one piece commonly described as having two main parts. One part is the crown that sits above the gums. The second part is a root that sits securely in your jaw bone.

A dental implant treatment in Saginaw, Michigan may involve several pieces; however, it may also be described as having two main parts. One part is a restoration that is custom fabricated to match the shape of a natural tooth crown. The second part is the implant that Dr. Bannan, the Saginaw Area Dentist uses to  replace the function of a natural tooth root. Implants are made of titanium or titanium alloy. Unlike most materials, our body accepts titanium without infection.

How Do Porcelain Veneers Differ From Dental Crowns?

In comparison to a dental crown, the classic porcelain veneer is a wafer thin shell of ceramic that is bonded onto the front side of a tooth. Whereas a dental crown covers over and encases the entire tooth, a porcelain veneer just covers over the side of the tooth that shows when the person smiles. Dental crowns and porcelain veneers also differ by way of their relative thickness. The classic porcelain veneer will measure 1 millimeter in thickness or less, as opposed to a dental crown that typically measures 2 millimeters or more.

Porcelain Veneers Resist Staining

As a group, cosmetic dental bonding materials have the shortcoming of being susceptible to staining and discoloring. This is especially true when they are used in conjunction with individuals whose consumption habits include the use of tea, coffee, red wine, and tobacco products.

A significant advantage of placing porcelain veneers as opposed to cosmetic dental bonding is that a porcelain veneer's surface is just that, porcelain. Since porcelain is a ceramic, and therefore glass-like, a veneer's porcelain surface will be extremely stain resistant.

What are Lumineers® porcelain veneers?

Lumineers® are a trademarked type of ultra-thin porcelain veneer owned and marketed by the Den-Mat corporation.  The technology for making this product is not new, even though the marketing message infers otherwise.  In fact, there are several other equally effective porcelain systems available. The most important factor in the final result is the skill of the dentist and the ceramist, who are responsible for creating beautiful ultra-thin porcelain veneers.
